Despite the warm weather this week, the woods and most of the trails still holding on to some snow. The skiing is starting to wind down for sure but still enough coverage here and there for us diehards to get out in the woods. Monday was an amazing day for skiing in April. The weather has been good for the sap to run from the maple trees. We no longer collect sap but many of the locals in the area collect sap to boil down for syrup. It takes 40 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup!! The lake is still thick with ice and we will be lucky to have ice out by the end of this month. Last year the ice was off on April 2nd! It is great to see the signs of spring. The waterfowl is on the move looking for open water (no sounds of loons yet) and the long days and intense sunshine on the clear days is heartening.
Total snowfall this past season was 94″. We are closed for the season. Thanks to everyone who came to Maplelag this season making it another great year. The trails will open for mountain biking once the
End of Skaters Waltz Friday morning, April 8th, 2001. Still mostly covered with snow despite warm temps this week.

Sap bags collecting sap near Roy's Run ski trail.Plastic bag collecting sap to be boiled to syrup!
Incredible morning for April 4th. Around an inch of new snow was groomed in on Skaters Waltz and North Loup. Temp below freezing before 10am but intense sunshine softening the snow. Still fantastic skiing for early April on the trails groomed this morning. Should cool down at dusk and skiing should be nice at sunset and very nice Tuesday morning. We are most likely done grooming North Loup for the year but the skiing should be good this week with proper timing. Hard to believe how much snow is in the woods when the fields and prairie are mostly snow free. Short section on Kamikaze hill burned out but otherwise the trails being groomed have complete full coverage. Has been a winter for the record books for sure, enjoying our 7th month on the calendar of skiing!

Still skiing the first week of April!! Five inches of snow Thursday and Friday melting off but still a solid base on the trails with a few thin/open areas. Couple skiers out on the weekend enjoying the late season skiing. A trip around Skaters Waltz and North Loup late Sunday afternoon found full coverage except the top part of Kamikaze hill. Hard to believe how much snow is in the woods when the fields and prairie are mostly snow free. Skiing a little slow with the warm temps but faster than expected. Looks to cool down tonight with a dusting of snow and we should have some nice skiing the first part of the week.

North Loup trail Sunday afternoon, April 3rd, 2011. Still plenty of snow for some late season skiing!
We woke up to almost 3″ of fresh snow Friday morning. That makes around 5″ of new snow this week. Winter won’t let go! Getting in the lower 40’s today so the snow was sticky and slushy. We don’t plan on grooming again until possibly Sunday but the trails are open and there should be some good skiing (for April!!) with the right timing and cooler temps, on through the weekend. Still lots of snow in the woods.
