MapleHus

The MapleHus is named after the original and first home at Maplelag where Jim and Mary resided when starting Maplelag in 1973. The first structure was the garage and a year later construction began on the home. The home features beautiful cedar timbers, reclaimed maple flooring from local gymnasiums. local wood from the Maplelag property, reclaimed bricks and barn wood.

The early years the Richards family lived in the basement and until a decade or so later, the upstairs was finished and the family moved up with more bedrooms, living room, laundry and a kitchen. The basement served housing for the staff, the first two decades students from Norway as well as other helpers that worked on constructing the other buildings and cabins at Maplelag. It truly defined the meaning of “Maplelag” which is loosely translated to “Maple community”. An addition was built in the 90’s but never completed.

After the fire of 2022 and then the passing of Jim in August of 2024, meanwhile Mary is residing in Detroit Lakes, Jay and Jonell made the decision to remodel the main house and finish the addition during the spring and summer of 2025. The home now features five bedrooms, three full baths, a living room, a fully stocked kitchen and dining room (floor plans below) overlooking beautiful Little Sugarbush lake. Many items from Jim and Mary’s collection are on display capturing the spirit of Maplelag in the early years. It is also a snowball throw from the old sauna which was also remodeled the spring of 2025. We are very excited to offer the home, keeping the foundation of Maplelag alive with a fresh new look.
