Frost flowers form after the lake has frozen over and cold nights freeze any moisture lingering at the surface. Not every year does it happen as the ice needs to be snow free.

Full Moon

Keep in mind there is usually a week or so before the full moon that can be counted on for good moonlight skiing with the moon rise earlier in the evening.  After a full moon has passed with a later moon rise and set, some of the most interesting moonlight skiing is around 4 or 5am. Skiing in moonlight then skiing into a sunrise is a great experience.
