Great day on tap for skiing and the Section 8 Nordic Ski Championships. Skiers will be racing on Skaters Waltz today from 10am to 3pm. We have a track set on Skaters Waltz for the classic race and will leave it there for additional classic skiing on the trail system until new snow. Best to ski counter clockwise. The tracks are a bit hard and icy in spots on the 25km we have set but we have snow, we can ski and people are doing great. Like we said before, we appreciate the positive attitude by everyone. Use caution, walk the hills on the side if you have to and just ski. Best trails for classic skiing are Sukkerbusk, Twin Lakes and North Loup. Sap Run, JibFly, Mother North Star and Rootin Tootin also have track set, bit more rough in spots but skiable. Snowshoeing is good, nice to see people checking out some new areas this week. Folks skating on the ice rink as well and sledding happening in the back bowl. Surface conditions are hardpack/icy. Compacted base on trail is 2-4″ and snow depth in the woods is 3-4″. Total snowfall since January 1st is 8″. Around 30m tracked for classic, 15km groomed skate and all other have a packed base or skier made track. A few trails in the AMA area will not be groomed this year. Areas of thin cover and rough. Check the trail report board in the main lodge for the latest trail information. The trails are open. Trail passes for day skiing for non lodging guests are $15. Ski rental available at $15 a package. During mid week, lunch and day trail pass package available for $25. Trail Report
The trails are open. A chilly start to February with temps below 0 in the morning but warming up nicely with light wind and sunshine making for nice winter days. Today we will be working on the Section course for Tuesday’s race.
A nice weekend on the trails, busy with ski teams training for Sections on Tuesday, families out skiing and even yoga skiing on the trails. Skiing is fast on hard/icy conditions. Skating is good with positive reports from skiers on Skaters Waltz. It is still very fast but enough structure for edging. The best track skiing right now is on Sukkerbusk, Twin Lakes and the groomer’s choice, North Loup. Other tracked trails are being skied on, few more rough/hard spots.
Bottom line, we have snow, we can ski and people are doing great. As we said before, we appreciate the positive attitude by everyone. Use caution, walk the hills on the side if you have to and just ski. Snowshoeing is good, nice to see people checking out some new areas this week. Surface conditions are hardpack/icy. Compacted base on trail is 2-4″ and snow depth in the woods is 3-4″. Total snowfall since January 1st is 8″. Around 28km tracked for classic, 15km groomed skate and all other have a packed base or skier made track. A few trails in the AMA area will not be groomed this year. Areas of thin cover and rough. Check the trail report board in the main lodge for the latest trail information.

Last year we were shoveling off the trail just to pass through with the snowmobile. Quite the opposite this year! January 27th, 2015.

Trail Report
Another beautiful frosty day on tap. No new snow past 24 hours other than the frost that fell from the trees early afternoon. Temps falling in to the lower single digits last night firming up the base nicely. Grooming today on all the skate trails, a new track on Twin Lakes. Grooming yesterday morning on Skaters Waltz and we also combed and set a track where possible on Mother North Star. Ski patrol at noon found fast and firm tracks and fun skiing! Yes, the base is thin for this time of year and of course we all want more snow but the snow we do have is skiing nicely and some fun skiing to be had. A few thin and rough areas to watch out for. Classic skiing fair to good and skate skiing good to very good. Top trails for classic include North Loup and Twin lakes and Skaters Waltz best trail for skating. The snowshoe trail is open and is packed.
Surface conditions are frozen granulated/powder mix with a dusting of frost snow on top. Compacted base on trail is 2-4″ and snow depth in the woods is 3-6″. Total snowfall since January 1st is 8″. Around 28km tracked for classic, 15km groomed skate and all other have a packed base or skier made track. A few trails in the AMA area will not be groomed this year. Check the trail report board in the main lodge for the latest trail information.

Trail Report
Bit cooler day on tap after a balmy day on Tuesday with temps right around 30. No new snow overnight. Yesterday we packed and combed Island Lake, Wavy Gravy and Roy’s Run. We did not set a track but these trails are still open for skiing, just a few rough spots on the marsh areas. We also combed on Skaters Waltz and Suicide Hill. Skating in the afternoon was awesome. Skaters and Suicide in fantastic shape. Grooming on Skaters Waltz again this morning.
A great MLK day of skiing. We hovered right around the 32 degree mark with no melting thanks to overcast skies and cold frozen ground. Sunday going down as the best day so far this winter. What a fantastic day of Nordic play!! More trails tracked and all skate trails groomed in the morning. Absolutely no wind, 28 degrees and afternoon sunshine making for a most incredible day. Great reports from the trail with North Loup and Twin Lakes getting the top reports. Track set late Saturday night on North Loup, full depth and just a few leafy areas but overall some great skiing. Sukkerbusk has been skied hard but holding out great. Skating very good on Skaters Waltz and good on the extension and North Loup.
There are still a few rough and thin spots but the new snow Saturday morning helped out nicely with the coverage. Overall, skiing is good to very good with scattered fair spots. Compacted base on trail is 2-4″ and snow depth in the woods is 3-6″. Total snowfall since January 1st is 8″. Around 23km tracked for classic, 15km groomed skate and all other trails have a skied in track on top of a packed base or in virgin powder. A few trails in the AMA area will not be groomed this year. Check the trail report board in the main lodge for the latest trail information.
The trails are open. Trail passes are $15. Ski rental available at $15 a package. During mid week, lunch and trail pass package available. Call 218-375-4466 or email at [email protected] for more information

Fat Bike Report
The fat bike conditions are good on area forest roads and folks can also go on the packed snowshoe trail. A few folks have been on the twin lakes singletrack but expect deeper snow and challenging riding. Check with Jay on where to ride if you bring your fat bike to Maplelag.
Fat biking has exploded in popularity in recent years, opening the door to unlimited winter cycling adventures! Even though cross country skiing is our number one focus in the winter time, being avid cyclists at Maplelag, we can’t deny the fun on a fat bike! This winter we will have the snowshoe trail and Twin Lakes single track open for fat biking. Fat biking will not be allowed on the ski trails. There are also area forest roads that are good fat biking. We will do our best to keep the Twin Lakes single track packed for fat biking during the winter. Ski trail grooming will take priority but riders are encouraged to and snowshoers welcome to help pack out the trail as well!
Access to the Twin Lakes single track is off the Maplelag driveway at the bridge section. After the “bridge” section, riders will come to the ski trail and will follow the ski trail for a short while before entering the single track. The loop is right around 3 miles and comes back to the driveway. When traveling on the ski trail, please stay off the tracks when tracks are set. The proper area to ride will be in between the ski tracks.
Any questions on fat biking at Maplelag, please feel free to contact us. At this time we do not have rentals but hoping to have a fat biking fleet to rent in the near future.
