The storm moving through the northern plains has provided misty, damp conditions. We have not received any new snow since the snow we received in November which is still evident here and there on the trail system. The trails are in great shape and won’t take much to have skiable conditions. The northeast facing sections of trail still holding sections of snow cover and just a few inches will be able to get these trails open. It has been a record dry fall and we are ready for it to change and start snowing!! Think Snow!! Above freezing temps overnight has melted off most of the snow on the lake, unfortunately, and not possible to ski on the lake now. Once it re freezes should be improved ice skating. We are waiting for next cold front to begin making ice in the ice skating rink.
Unfortunately no new snow to report. Despite the warm temps Sunday afternoon, the sections of trail that have snow coverage are still hanging on and won’t take much to have early season skiing on these segments. The trails are frozen hard and await fresh snow! We are keeping an eye on a possible system to move through later this week. Check back for the latest!
The recent cold temps have set up good ice on the lakes and ponds. We have been ice skating on the lake and also skiing on the western edges. The coverage is thin but the skiing is doable with caution. The ice thickness on the lake is being reported from 5-7″ and there was a small pickup driving on the lake over the weekend!
Just a few dustings of snow to report this week. We are waiting for more snow to groom and open the trails. The temps have been plenty cold! The lakes, ponds and sloughs are making good ice which is great before the snow comes and we have been enjoying ice skating on the lake and skiing on the lake as well. Skiing on the lake is “fair” with a very thin cover and best skiing is on edges. Little Sugarbush has been “noisy” as the ice expands and contracts! We have been taking advantage of the dry weather and working on the trails, fine tuning here and there, clearing deadfall and putting up signs. There are sections of crusty snow patches here and there with Twin lakes trail holding the most snow and also Suicide hill. It won’t take much snow to open up Twin lakes and the other trails are in great shape as well. Signs of wildlife seen in the woods with tracks, beaver activity and the winter birds making sounds.
