Trail Report

Incredible day on Tuesday. Sun came out around noon, temps in the mid teens and lighter winds. Awesome day on the trails. Packing, grooming and cutting new tracks all day.

Intense winter storm dropped 6-8″ of snow with some strong winds on Sunday/Monday. We have been packing and grooming on the trails since the new snow fell. Tracks set yesterday afternoon on Sap Run, Sukkerbusk and Mother North Star. Tracks set today on Twin Lakes, Rootin Tootin, Sap Run and Jib Fly. Packing and combing on North Loup and Roys Run.  Skaters waltz and the extension groomed multiple times and skate lane should be firm on Skaters albeit a bit slow with the cold new snow. We will be back out on Wednesday packing to the west and touching up some trails on the inner loops.

Trails that have been groomed and open with tracks set: Sukkerbusk, Twin Lakes, North Loup, Rootin Tootin, Mother North Star, Sap Run, Wavy Gravy, Island Lake, Roy’s Run and JibFly. Skaters Waltz, the extension and North Loup groomed for skating. Please no skating on trails other than Skaters Waltz, North Loup and the extension of Skaters. North Loup also has a track set. Please note portions of certain trails will not be groomed this year due to change in the lease and management on AMA property.

Trail Report

Winter wonderland! A snowy Sunday at Maplelag as 6-8″ of snow with some deeper pockets blanketing the trails. Another inch or two overnight leaving close to 10″ of new snow in areas with some drifts over 2 feet! The first 3-4″ very wet and bending a lot of branches etc. Very beautiful in the woods where the wind hasn’t blown down the snow. A busy week of clearing branches and grooming on tap but a great start for the week with all the fresh snow. With wind still blowing on Monday, it will take a few days to have the trails groomed proper. We set track on a handful of trails Monday afternoon but mostly packing until the wind settles down.  We aren’t aggressive on our branch cutting so heads up when skiing until the branches spring back!

A great day on the trails Saturday! We did warm up to the mid 30’s and actually warmed up a bit more into the evening but the base of transformed snow skied nicely and there was no stickiness to speak of. The tracks did glaze a bit making for a few adjustments in the waxing for the waxable skis but skating was great all day, maybe a bit slower when it warmed up but bottomline folks were skiing and as we have said, no reason not to ski.

Trail Report

Morning low at 19 with no wind. Cool temps and drier air setting up this weeks grooming perfectly. Fantastic skiing conditions. Reports from the Friday skiers all most excellent including local skiers saying best conditions of the year. We groomed on most of the trail system this past week, mixing new snow from Wednesday into the existing base of transformed snow. The mixture is ideal for grooming and skiing, especially if it warms up. The base is dense and compacted so any warm up the snow handles it well making for better skiing versus dry fresh snow which can be sticky. Forecast calling for high of 38 today but there will be plenty of great skiing all day and no reason not to ski. Just ski.

Total snowfall since December 15th=23″, compacted base on trail 4-7″. Snow depth in the woods 12-16″. Overall the trails have very good coverage, a few rough spots on the marsh/lake crossings to use caution, especially on the north end of Bullhead trail when accessing the Bootleg extension on Maplelag property. Total snowfall since December 1st, 29″. Total snowfall since November 20th= 31″. We had a warm spell that melted most of the snow from November 20th and December 1st other than the north facing areas. First grooming of the season on November 20th after 2″ of snowfall.

Trail Report

A great day of skiing on tap. Grooming on most of the trail system this morning after a dusting of snow yesterday morning. We groomed the new snow in to the skate trails (Skaters Waltz, Single Green Hill, Suicide Hill, and extension) and North Loup which is groomed for skate and classic again. We also set new tracks on Sukkerbusk.  Having the transformed snow as a base to mix with new snow makes for ideal grooming and skiing and responds to any warm weather more favorably.  Conditions are excellent at Maplelag! There is no reason not to ski so come out and just ski!

Trails that have been groomed and open with tracks set: Sukkerbusk, Twin Lakes, North Loup, Rootin Tootin, Mother North Star, Sap Run, Wavy Gravy, Island Lake, Roy’s Run and JibFly. Trail Report

A great day for the Section 8 Nordic Ski Championships at Maplelag. Super fun event with perfect weather as 13 girls and 14 boys teams from northwest and central Minnesota competed for the chance to go to the state meet. We always enjoy hosting these events and the Section race has a bit more energy feel with state berths on the line. Great job to all the skiers and congrats to the teams and individuals that qualified for the state meet. Big thanks to all the support staff, officials and volunteers for making it a great day. The coverage is very good to excellent and the base is solid. We will be grooming most of the groomed trail system on Thursday and Friday and should be a fantastic rest of the week in to the weekend of skiing.
