Mountain Bike Trail Report

The mountain bike trails are now closed. The trails will be open again Thanksgiving week, weather permitting. We will have the main Twin Lakes open for fat biking this winter grooming when possible. We will also be grooming a short track for fat biking around the lodge and cabins and soccer fields. We will have five fat bikes available for rent.

We resumed new mountain bike trail work on the Maplelag property this fall east of Bullhead lake and making good progress. The plan is to have a 3 mile singletrack loop that will be signature Maplelag hand built classic singletrack with sections of machine built flow like trail. We hope to have this new trail open for riding late spring/ early summer of 2017.

The trails are always open, closed only when raining. After a rain event, the trails are usually rideable 2-6 hours after, depends on humidity and dew points. Contact us if any questions.

The Maplelag singletrack is mostly hand built and entirely hand tuned. It can be described as raw, natural, “old school” and mostly technical riding. We are riders ourselves that have been racing and riding around the world for over 25 years and have a deep passion for mountain biking. We have built all the trail on our own time with no outside financial assistance. The Laddies Loppet mountain bike weekend is the main source of funding for new trail build. Bottom line we are happy to share this passion with our signature trails that represent our personal taste for types of trails we like to ride. We are glad to see people get into the wonderful sport of mountain biking including the type of trails that exist at Maplelag.

The Citizen/Beginner loop is mostly ski trail with a few short sections of singletrack and adequate for beginners. This loop starts near the flag pole and head out on skaters waltz ski trail to the left. The sport/comp/expert loop is for experience/advanced riders. Sport/Expert loop starts with the lakeside singletrack south of the main lodge near start of Sap Run ski trail. Twin Lakes singletrack can be accessed from the Maplelag driveway. The mountain bike trail is marked with red signs at key intersections. There is no charge to use the trails the remainder of the season. Park by the gate at Twin lakes or the soccer field parking lot and ride! Enjoy!

Note: all trail users assume responsibility and responsible for their actions if riding on the mountain bike course. Be aware there are unmarked obstacles and hazards that may lead to injury. Often times trees will fall across the trail after we have cleared on the course earlier in the day and we have no control when this happens. Use caution! There are a few changes on the DNR AMA land that we have marked at the start with yellow tape to avoid. Stay on the ski trail that is marked with yellow tape at the intersections.

Mountain Bike Trail Report

The mountain bike trails are open.  We had a nice day of riding before rain later afternoon. Rain was light but will be a bit slick in the morning and be closed if more rain. Leaves drifting down now for a nice fall feel.  We  blew the leaves of the Twin Lakes loop Tuesday morning but wind has brought leaves down. However, some of the best riding of the season is right now after the course is buffed nicely from the Laddies Loppet race weekend!

There are two sections of singletrack that are closed that are marked off due to excessive tree and forest matter. We hope to have open again next season as we focus trail work on the current loop and building new trail.

Thanks to everyone that came to the Laddies Loppet weekend and helped make it another great weekend! Recap with links to photosets on skinnyski.com

Trail Report

One of the most beautiful times of the year at Maplelag! The leaves are starting to change and the woods are becoming vibrant with fall color.  We are doing some light cat work this week, making a second option for the start of Roy’s Run ski trail, cleaning out a few corners and filling in low spots.

Definitely can tell fall is here with leaves changing, falling and the forest floor showing signs as well.  First frost of the year last Wednesday.  We have been busy on the trails mowing and clearing trees from storms earlier this summer.

The mountain bike trails are open daily unless raining. Bike trail report click here.

It was a  wet July and  August that saw nearly 20″ of precipitation along with a few wind storms that brought over 150 trees down on the trails!!

We continue to work on the ski trails, clearing trees and mowing. We have been out on the mowers every day we can, preparing the trails for the coming winter! We will mow most of the trails at least once every 10 days.  We focus on 25km to have as smooth and buffed as possible going in to the winter to have skiing on minimal snow, sometimes 5″ or less.

Note: We are not mowing on the AMA trails this year. The AMA segments are closed to local motorized equipment. We have taped off the trails where closed.

Trail work on tap this fall includes, clearing deadfall off the ski trails and, of course, mowing.  We also are planning on building a new ski trail by Twin Lakes for singletrack classic skiing. This new ski trail we hope to complete by next ski season 2017-18.  We also resume new mountain bike trail building on a loop we started over by Bullhead lake last fall on the Maplelag property. Tree clearing this summer has put a hold on new trail building but we hope to resume this fall.

The mountain bike trails are open daily unless raining.  Bike trail report click here.

The trails are closed to horses and motorized traffic.

Ski season 2015/16  snow totals:  45″ November 15th-March 15th . First grooming of the season on November 20th after 2″ of snowfall. We skied daily and only missed a few days of grooming between December 15th until March 11th.

Mountain Biking Trail Report

We welcomed the rain that fell the past 24 hours which was good for the forest floor and helped tack up the singletrack after a dry spring so far. The trails are “dry” and ready for riding but we have much trail maintenance on the bike trails before we can officially open the course. We hope to officially open the course by May 1st, earlier if possible and weather depending.

Trail Report

Despite warm temps earlier in the week,  we are still hanging on to some coverage and have been skiing on the better sections of trail. A check of the trails Thursday, skiing Skaters Waltz and North Loup found mostly good coverage. Kamikaze section thin and not recommended to ski.  Still was a bit icy but just starting to soften up around noon making for fun spring skiing.  North Loup little better coverage with just one section very thin with a short bare spot. Skiing is poor to fair with some good sections and also thin bare sections. Use caution if venturing out and be ready for sudden bare spots and lots of forest debris. With the very warm forecast, we will most likely be closing the trails Friday afternoon. This includes being closed to skiing, hiking and mountain biking. Travel on the trails when the ground is soft can be most damaging and please walk/hike on the driveway or forest roads across the Maplelag driveway.

Total snowfall since December 15th=34″, compacted base on trail 0-8″. Snow depth in the woods 4-16″. Total snowfall since December 1st, 40″. Total snowfall since November 20th= 42″. We had a warm spell that melted most of the snow from November 20th and December 1st other than the north facing areas. First grooming of the season on November 20th after 2″ of snowfall. We have been skiing daily and only missed a few days of grooming since December 15th.
