The coldest morning of the season recorded today as the temp dropped down nicely to -39 locally and a fun day to walk around with the wax thermometer. Although it is quite cold, the conditions are calm and doesn’t feel as cold as say yesterday when the wind was blowing and blizzardlike conditions were experienced in the open areas, in particular to the west. Most of the guests at Mapelag early this week from out of state and enjoying the opportunity to brag about the cold temps. Short loops best bet for skiing today as it slowly warms up. We picked up about an inch of new snow yesterday and the trails were skied in. Chance of more snow tonight and grooming on select trails tomorrow as most trails will be set with new tracks and fresh grooming before the weekend. There are a few areas of drifted snow and organic matter from the wind but grooming later this week will put the trails in top condition.
A great weekend of skiing on the trails. Conditions pretty much as good as it gets. Temps in the mid teens both days with light winds and lots of sunshine both days. Fresh grooming Sunday morning on Sukkerbusk, Twin Lakes, Skaters Waltz, JibFly, Rootin Tootin and Bullhead lake trail and the bootleg extension. Looks like some snowy weather moving in followed by some cooler weather but nothing colder than what we have already seen this winter!! Fantastic skiing should be on tap with cold weather remaining in place, keeping the snow fresh.
The four schools of the Rochester Area ski team were at Maplelag the weekend of January 9th-11th for a training camp and held a time trial on Sunday before going home. Photos below from the time trial.
After the morning groom, the entire trail system has been groomed 1-3 times the past four days including the short cut over trails. Skiing conditions are excellent. Dusting of snow the past 24 hours. The compacted base on the trail is 6-9″ and the snow depth in the woods is 16-20″. Skaters Waltz, the extension of Skaters and North Loup groomed for skating and all other trails have a either a single track set or double tracks. North Loup also has a track set on the side for classic skiing and open for skating as well. Should be a great weekend of skiing with ideal temps and good snow. Refresh grooming on Sunday morning.
Another beautiful winter day on the trails. With lots of snow, pretty much every day is beautiful. Another morning with negative temps as -15 recorded this morning. Warming up a bit with sun cloud/mix before all sunshine, light winds and single digits above. Grooming this morning on Mother Hen, Sap Run, Lucky’s Loype, Bullhead, the “toot” and Debbie Woodles Cutoff!! Ski conditions are excellent and with cold temps, it has been a good old fashioned like winter so far. The storm watch for the next 24 hours has been downgraded a bit but either way we plan on grooming most of the trails tomorrow for the weekend skiers and should be another fantastic weekend of skiing.
