Trail Report

(We are hoping to get the cam up and running as soon as possible. Tech difficulties!)

A great day of skiing on the trails Sunday. The temp didn’t rise above negative double digits but the trails saw a lot of action and over 200 people skiing the trails. Dressed properly, it is not “cold” and windchill is irrelevant in the woods.  Despite cooler temps forecasted this week, there is some great skiing to be had. We appreciate the positive attitude of our guests that our heading out and….JUST SKIING!!! Nice work! As the saying goes, there is  no such thing as cold or bad temperatures, just bad clothing! Light snow falling Monday morning. Grooming planned on select trails and grooming in afternoon after snow stops.

A great ski camp last weekend with teams from Champlain Park, St Paul Highland Park, Cooper and Bloomington logging in some serious kilometers. Handful of kids skiing 80km on Saturday and big group of kids logging over 100km over Friday, Saturday and today. Most impressed seeing all the head lamp skiers early mornings while out grooming than again at night. Nice work kids and coaches!

Great day on the trails for the DL Invitational ski meet. Temp in the lower single digits and light wind but high humidity making it feel chilly. The kids in all the races did great and always fun to see the energy and enthusiasm of all the kids. Teams from Alexandria, Brainerd, Bemidji, Deer River, Trek North, Detroit Lakes, Little Falls and Fergus Falls competing. Photos from the day on our Facebook page.

Total snowfall this season at 26″.  Compacted base on trail 4-6″ and 12-15″ snow depth in woods.  Great conditions for December. The trails are open for skiing and open for day skiing.  Around 50km of trail tracked for classic and 15km groomed skate. Conditions are  hard packed. We are grooming daily on different trails each day. Parts of Bullhead lake trail, Kristin’s Kutoff,  Single Green and a few other short segments not groomed and open for bushwhacking.

With calm conditions and temps in the single digits, the lake Maplelag is next to froze over entirely on November 11th, 2013. This is the earliest November freeze since 1993 and ranks in the top fifteen of earliest freeze overs since 1893, according to local record keeping Some great scenes on the edge of the lake the morning after freezing over.

Trail Report

Right around 15″ of new snow since Monday. Wow, that was quite the storm! Awesome! We have been packing the new snow on the trails and will continue packing on to the weekend. The trails are open for skiing. We plan to set tracks on select trails before Friday. The lodge is reserved for a wedding group this weekend but the trails will be open to use. Sunday at noon, limited services will be available in the lodge. The ground has frozen down nicely thanks to colder temps in November and will keep the snow in place. Winter wonderland conditions in the woods and some of the most snow this early in December in years!!

Bike Trail Report

The mountain bike trails are open during sub freezing temps. (32 degrees or cooler) With the ground frozen, if it warms up the surface gets greasy and muddy. The mountain bike trails will remain open until we begin trail grooming for the winter season. Fat Bikes are allowed at Maplelag during the winter on the snowshoe trail and select forest roads but not on the groomed ski trails. Contact us in advance for more information.

We made great progress this fall on the new twin lakes singletrack and should finish up with two weeks work in the spring.

A great weekend of racing for the Laddies Loppet stage race weekend. Warm summer like weather for racing on Saturday than a rain shower Saturday night followed by cooler weather for racing on Sunday. Thanks to everyone who came to Maplelag making it one of the best bike race weekends ever!

Trail Report

After warm and dry weather to start the week, cooler weather on Thursday after rain showers last night. The rain helped green up the grounds and looking more and more like spring. The ponds and sloughs are free of ice and very active with waterfowl. Little sugarbush remains 95% covered in ice but getting closer every day. The lake scene last night was incredible after the rain pushed through. Rainbow to the south, fog simmering of the lake and sun shining through from the northwest.

After the warmth and dry this week, the mountain bike course is now open for mountain biking!  Click here for the latest report and photos

Another great Laddies Loppet mountain bike stage race weekend. Around 600 riders between racing on Saturday and Sunday. Report from the weekend with links to results and photos on skinnyski.com.

The mountain bike course starts at the beginning of Skaters Waltz ski trail and is marked with red signs and black arrows. The Sport/Comp/Expert loop (intermediate to advanced)  is 7 miles and takes 40 minutes to 1 hour to complete.  The Twin lakes singletrack starts off the main driveway to the west, is 3 miles in length and takes 17 to 25 minutes to compete. Both trails depend on rider ability for amount of time required to complete. There is also a Citizen/Kids Comp loop that runs mainly on ski trails for more beginner type riding. All the ski trails are open for mountain biking as well. There are limited services available in the main lodge and closed when special events are going on.  Please purchase a trail pass to support maintenance efforts. The trails are closed to horses and motorized vehicles.
