Trails are open. Happy Valentines Day! No precipitation at Maplelag today as of 6:00pm. Keeping an eye on the radar as it looks to snow this evening with 1-3″ possible by Wednesday noon. Today we groomed all the skate trails and touched up Sap Run, the connector to the western trails and portions of Sukkerbuks.
We’ve been enjoying a early run of fantastic spring skiing and good to see a few folks out this week enjoying. This year is unique in that the snow we are skiing on now, is the moisture laden snow from late December. The south facing areas have transformed to “corn” snow and most of the other segments, in particular the north facing segments, are a silky sugary snow.
Lot of animals on the move and tons of tracks everywhere, especially on the inner trails. Eagles, grouse, porcupines, fox and pileated woodpeckers some of the wildlife sighted….keep your eyes open!
Trails groomed for classic and open include Sap Run, Mother Hen, JibFly, Loon Return, Sukkerbusk, Mother North Star, Rootin Tootin, North Loup, Roy’s Run, Island Lake, Wavy Gravy and Twin Lakes. For skating Skaters Waltz, the extension loops, Single Green, Kristin’s Cutoff and North Loup.
Lucky’s Loype and Bullhead trail are snow covered, no grooming and open for bushwhacking. We have packed a loop on Bullhead lake and set a track on the perimeter for classic.
Total snowfall this season at 45″. Compacted base on trail 6-11″.
Trails will be open every day there is skiable snow including all Holidays and weekends. There is no ski rental at Maplelag. MN Tru North in Perham MN is offering ski rental 218-346-5253
The Brant cabin available as a warming area with restrooms and sitting area and tables, parking available across from Brant cabin as well. There are no ski rentals available.
Ski trail season passes can be purchased on our website. (scroll down to bottom of page) Purchasing season pass helps with operating and maintenance costs to prepare the trails, equipment repairs to the grooming equipment and property taxes. Thank you.

The south facing areas have transformed to “corn” snow and most of the other segments in particular the north facing segments, are a silky sugary snow. Tuesday looks to be another good day of spring skiing, hard and fast in the morning than softening up as the day moves on. Also a chance of snow Tuesday afternoon with the potential of 1-4″ by Wednesday noon.

Trails open. Spring conditions. Best riding is in the mornings until we return to consistent cold weather. Entire FatLagChilada loop open and recently groomed. Was a nice weekend of riding with some great conditions in the morning. Monday afternoon we groomed the entire loop again, flattening down the base and setting it up for the next round of weather. Great conditions on tap for Tuesday morning riding.
The entire FatLagChilada loop consists of Skaters Waltz starting to the right, the main singletrack loops Bullhead Bootleg, Twin Lakes and Sukkerwest. We also have groomed select segments in between to make the “FatLagChilada” loop. The above loops can be ridden separately. To access the inner loops, go to the start of Skaters Waltz and veer right. There are orange signs from that point and at key intersections where to turn to make the full loop. Please only ride on the designated areas for fat biking.
The Maplelag driveway is a good feeder to access Sukkerwest, Bjorps across from Sukkerwest which leads into North Star and crosses the road again to Twin Lakes.
With the hardpack conditions on the ski trails, the skate loops Skaters Waltz, the extension loops and North Loup are open for riding making for around 35km of groomed riding options.
Trails are open. Great day of skiing Saturday. Pretty much textbook “spring ski conditions” with faster skiing in the morning that softening just enough mid afternoon on the sun kissed areas before glazing over again. Doesn’t look to be quite as warm today so trails will remain a bit faster all day but still some great skiing to be had. The snow and grooming holding out great. Saturday evening we groomed Skaters Waltz, Sap Run and touched up the more used areas on Sukkerbusk.
We groomed on the entire trail system Thursday and Friday, renovating and tenderizing the snow. Trails are skiing well considering the melt freeze cycle.. Always use a little extra caution on the hills and be aware of shaded areas and sun exposed areas for changing conditions.
A fantastic two days for the Section 8 Nordic Ski Championships. Incredible weather and racing. Thanks for all those that helped make it a great two days and to all the skiers competing hard. Photos and results posted on Skinnyski.com
A few areas with scattered organic forest matter otherwise very nice skiing conditions.
