Trail Report

Beautiful sunshine to greet skiers today. Folks out for a early morning ski before breakfast…. even with the coldest temps of the season in place! Was great to see so many skiers of all ages out yesterday. A positive mindset, good attitude and proper clothing, skiing in these temps no problem. It is a different sensation to complete a successful ski in this weather and a unique feeling of accomplishment. We are proud of everyone who has gotten out and very grateful for everyone that came this weekend.

We groomed every day this past week to make conditions as best as possible. Friday grooming on Skaters Waltz and the extension. Thursday grooming on the inner system, focusing on smaller loops to ski in consideration of the cooler weather. Sap Run, Mother Hen, JibFly using the bypass and Sukkerbusk are recommended trails to ski. There are also small loops you can make using the last part of Mother North Star and Sukkerbusk. Overall the entire trail system is in great shape and skiing very nice despite the cooler weather. (We will be posting the finishers on the Lotvola Cup page within a week).

Tuesday grooming on Skaters Waltz, all the singletrack classic and setting double track on North Loup. We will most likely keep double track on North Loup the remainder of the season in light of this trail being part of the Virtual Lotvola Cup. This could change however, depending on weather and snow conditions and skate ski interest. Monday we reset the track on Bullhead/Bootleg, a bit more windblown in areas over there. Recommend to wait skiing this loop until it warms up again.

The local fox has been sighted by skiers which is neat to hear after seeing it on the trails cams the past month. It has been sighted near the end of Mother North Star trail. Also, be sure to look for porcupines off Mother North Star and Roy’s Run trails, about 1/3rd the way in on both trails. Lots of other tracks including deer, wolf, coyote, pine marten, fox, and beaver to name a few. Also look for the new and active eagle nest at the start of Island Lake trail. You can also see the nest at the top of “eagle view” at the top of the last downhill on Twin Lakes trail. Many birds also to keep an eye for including the swooping pileated woodpecker.

Trails are open for day use. All day and season passes for non overnight guests must be purchased online through the website. (click here)

Note: Please do not snowshoe or walk on ski or fat bike trails. Thank you! We have designated snowshoe trails for snowshoeing and walking. We take pride in having as “clean” as possible ski and fat bike trails.

Trail Report

Despite the cooler weather in place, people are out skiing and we continue to groom the trails to make conditions as best as possible. Today groomed on the inner system, focusing on smaller loops to ski in consideration of the cooler weather. Sap Run, Mother Hen, JibFly using the bypass and Sukkerbusk are recommended trails to ski. There are also small loops you can make using the last part of Mother North Star and Sukkerbusk. Other options, ask Jay for details on best loops to ski. Overall the entire trail system is in great shape and skiing great despite the cooler weather.

Monday we reset the track on Bullhead/Bootleg and groomed up Skaters Waltz bringing more older snow to the surface to improve the glide. (We will be posting the finishers on the Lotvola Cup page hopefully this week).

Nice job everyone who was out this weekend in the cooler weather. Short trips, dress proper and skiing is good. We will be touching up the singletrack classic trails the next few days. Double track trails are skiing the best, just a few minor areas where windblown snow filled in the tracks. Nice to have the sunshine and wind is light in the woods making it feel much better than what phones etc. suggest.

Fat Bike Trail Report

Excellent surface conditions for riding. Base is rock solid and riding about as good as it gets. Monday we groomed around 18km of the 25km loop, leveling the areas that had drifted. A few areas with some small drifts after recent grooming on the Bootleg loop but a minor issue in the whole scheme of things. Just Ride!

For best riding experience, run lower tire pressure and widest tires possible. (please no mountain bikes) If you are making ruts, you need to lower your tire pressure. It will also make the riding easier and more fun! Please no hiking or snowshoeing on Fat Bike trails. Maplelag is one of the few tracks in the country that have fat bike exclusive use providing a smooth and level deck.

Grooming update: Entire 25km loop is open and groomed. Most recent grooming on Monday February 8th.

To access the bootleg loop, take Skaters Waltz ski trail, riding on the side than take Suicide Hill singletrack to bottom of Suicide Hill to access the Bootleg loop. Back up Suicide Hill on Skaters Waltz and follow grooming and look for eventual signage to complete the loop and continue on to Twin Lakes. To ride just Twin Lakes access half way down the driveway. Sukkerwest singletrack is accessed at end of the driveway and is a great beginner or starter loop.

Thanks Ben Olson for the volunteer grooming and use of the snowdog groomer!

All day and season passes for non overnight guests must be purchased online through the website. The Maplelag trails are not subsidized in any way and passes help offset grooming and property taxes.

Fat Bike Trail Report

Excellent surface conditions for riding. Base is rock solid and riding about as good as it gets. Monday we groomed around 18km of the 25km loop, leveling the areas that had drifted.
