Full Moon

Grooming under a December full moon 2007.
Grooming under a full moon, December 2007.

Keep in mind there is usually a week or so before the full moon that can be counted on for good moonlight skiing with the moon rise earlier in the evening.  After a full moon has passed with a later moon rise and set, some of the most interesting moonlight skiing is around 4 or 5am. Skiing in moonlight then skiing into a sunrise is a great experience.

The Lotvola Cup is a cross country ski race/tour where only the traditional technique is allowed. Lotvola Cup 2010 will be on Sunday March 7thNote: New start time at 11am. It will start on the lake with the usual blast of dynamite to get everyone’s adrenaline pumping. It is an event for all levels of ability, from the youngest skier to the serious competitor. A special Maplelag hat will be given to the first 95 registrants. Ribbons are awarded to the top finishers in each age class. But, the focus is on each individual having fun, feeling good about finishing and maybe bettering their time from the year before.

Recent years we have added a wood ski division which has become quite competitive. Traditional wood skis with boots and attire is encouraged. Special awards for top finishers including name engravment on a old wooden ski.

We will also have a kids race this year starting at 12:30pm. This will be two laps of Sap Run which is part of the finish of the Lotvola Cup. We will have two age categories, 7 and under and 8-12. Cost for the kids will be $5 but will NOT include the hat we are doing this year for the regular Lotvola Cup registrants. Ribbons will be awarded

We also award the “Mayor’s Cup” presented by Mayor Matt Brenk of Detroit Lakes. There is a chance for anyone to qualify for this honor, as Matt determines a new category each year and it is not announced until the race is finished. (Farthest traveler, first registrant, youngest female finisher, are a few examples.) We also have a wood ski division for those that use “wood” skis. Overall awards to the first male and female. Please consider a return trip to Maplelag for this event or make this your special weekend of the ski season.

Start Time: 11 am

Course: 12K of Pisten Bully and Ginzu groomed, double tracked trail over varied terrain (woods, clearings)

Registration: Please pre-register if possible, otherwise race day registration is available. $25.00 for adults, $15.00 if under 17. Lotvola cup Flyer
