MooseJaw 2010

March 12, 2010 12:00 pmtoMarch 14, 2010 2:00 pm

The theme for this year’s MooseJaw is MooseJaw at the Movies, so be sure to come as your favorite star from the silver screen. We’ll most likely have a red carpet premier along with our own take on the Oscars. We’ll also be having the usual assortment of music—this year our old-time band will be the Tallboys from Seattle. For the local band, we’ll be featuring the Ukrainian Village Band for traditional Ukrainian dancing and music. Our caller for 2010 is the incomparable Beverly Smith. There will also be a wide range of workshops this year—old-time fiddle, banjo and guitar, Ukrainian singing, dance and fiddle music, a jug band symposium (so be sure to bring a jug band instrument of some sort—anything goes!), clogging, squares, contras, calling and more. Enjoy miles of beautiful cross country skiing, the sauna and hot tub, and of course, the bottomless cookie jar.

Full Moon

Grooming under a full moon, December 2007
Grooming under a full moon, December 2007

Keep in mind there is usually a week or so before the full moon that can be counted on for good moonlight skiing with the moon rise earlier in the evening.  After a full moon has passed with a later moon rise and set, some of the most interesting moonlight skiing is around 4 or 5am. Skiing in moonlight then skiing into a sunrise is a great experience.

Cost for the kids will be $5 but will NOT include the hat we are doing this year for the regular Lotvola Cup registrants. Ribbons will be awarded

There is a chance for anyone to qualify for this honor, as Matt determines a new category each year and it is not announced until the race is finished. (Farthest traveler, first registrant, youngest female finisher, are a few examples.) We also have a wood ski division for those that use “wood” skis. Overall awards to the first male and female. Please consider a return trip to Maplelag for this event or make this your special weekend of the ski season.
