Damp and wet conditions in place with light rain moving in again Friday. With over 2″ of rain the past week and high water tables, a few low spots are wet. Trails are open, will be wet as until it slowly dries out.
No bugs, great sight lines, no heat or humidity….great time of the year for mountain biking! Weather has also been good for trail work this spring as we are back working on new trail near Bullhead lake on Maplelag property and tuning up select areas on the main loop.
We’ve had a great start to the season with a rapid snow melt than extremely dry conditions with warm nights that took the frost out fast. We cleared out the entire mountain bike course over a course of 7-10 days. Few leaves blowing back in after clearing otherwise the deck is in good shape. We also opened up two segments that were closed the last two years (Fargo segment and Jakes’s Snake) and have now transitioned to working on new trail near Bullhead lake on the Maplelag property.
Click here for trail map. Trail starts at the Skaters Waltz ski trail. All main intersections are now marked and signs at the key intersections for beginner (citizen) or advanced (sport/comp/expert). Please park in far parking lot next to blue dumpsters. There are no services available in the lodge at this time. Park and ride!
Summer pass can be purchased online, good for whole season. (There is no charge for Maplelag team members). The Maplelag trails are self supported with no grants or outside assistance. Trail pass revenue helps offset trail maintenance and property taxes. Thank you.
Wet conditions back in place after a beautiful start to the week. Light rain on Friday with .11″. Wednesday .63″ of rain. A wet weekend with 1.5″ of rain falling off and on throughout the weekend.
Outside the rain, overall it has been a beautiful start to spring at Maplelag with pleasant weather. Conditions have been mostly dry and a bit cooler. We have been taking advantadge of the nice working conditions cleaning deadfall along the side of the trails and cutting firewood for next season for the wood burning stoves at Maplelag. We also planted nearly a 1000 trees last week.
We have also been working on the existing mountain bike singletrack clearing and removing deadfall and have resumed new trail build on Maplelag property near Bullhead lake. We will also be making new tweaks to select ski trails including Mother Hen and Double green for new beginner loops for next season.
Little Sugarbush, lake Maplelag is next to, went ice free Thursday April 25th.
Final ski of the year on Friday, April 19th before warm weather moved in melting off all the snow.
Thanks to everyone that came to Maplelag this past season!! A great year with seven months of grooming and skiing!
Total snowfall this past season from November 1st at 96″ Total snowfall from October 1st at 102″. Opening day for the ski season on November 12th after skiing a few days in October and grooming in October. Last day of skiing on April 19th, 2019.
It has been a great start to spring with a nice variety of migrating birds and the woods are alive with the sounds and sights of nature. We will be hosting one of the events in the Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds, a presentation by Carrol Henderson on the “Return of the Peregrine Falcon” followed by a dinner featuring Mapelag’s famous pan fried walleye!
