Frost Photos March, 4th 2004

Like a peak of fall color in the autumn, the morning of March 4th has to be one of the "peaks" of this winter season. The day before, March 3rd, we received 3-4" of new snow at Maplelag. The snow that had fallen was a little sticky so it clung to the trees nicely. That night, the skies cleared and the temp dropped down to a early morning low of 3 degrees. I was grooming early in the morning and the air was dry and crisp. At sunrise, the air had more of a "thick" feel to it. As the sun came through the trees it felt like we were in a bowl of Debbies "yellow pea soup". You could almost see the frost form to the snow on the trees creating a double whammy on the postcard factor. Around breakfast time the sun started to peak through the clouds and the trees were light up incredibly. For most of the morning we were treated to beautiful conditions. By noon, the sun had burned off the frost on the trees, the wind picked up blowing some of the snow off the trees and the clouds moved in. Still a beautiful day but the 4 hours in the morning were awesome.
